Discussion Board for Korean Developers (Android)

'Why doesn't Samsung Developers have a forum supporting Korean?', is one of the inquiries we got most frequently. Well, as a starting point of it, Samsung Developers opened a forum supporting Korean at Samsung Developer Android site.

A forum for Samsung Android Libraries is now available at http://bit.ly/mUB56m and supporting Korean. Now it supports only the inquires on Zirconia library, protecting apps from illegal copy but it's supposed to expand its coverage in near future.

Developers in Korea who're developing and submitting your Android App for Samsung Apps, now you can discuss about the issues you're facing in your mother tongue.

Pure Breeze: a new launcher by Samsung R&D

The first prize of the Samsung Electronics’ bada Developer Challenge 2010 was awarded to ‘Mooncoder’, a Polish developer team that submitted the Little Sailor application. A total of 2077 teams from 54 countries fiercely competed in this bada Developer Challenge which was held from May 2010 to December 2010. Mooncoder (Szymon Ulatowski and Maciej Komosinski) was awarded the first prize of US $30,000. Szymon Ulatowski is an independent developer developing and supplying games through www.toyspring.com and he was in charge of the graphics coding, 3D models and GUI designs for Little Sailor. 4th August, London, UK – Samsung’s eagerly anticipated Galaxy Tab 10.1 is now available to buy in stores across the UK. The UK’s leading electrical retailers, Currys and PC World, which have been taking pre-orders for the WiFi version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 over the last ten days, opened their Tottenham Court Road store in London at 5pm last night, a day before the official launch for customers to collect their products, with Yuk Lin Wong from Edgware becoming the first person in the UK to collect her Galaxy Tab 10.1.

As we pulled up to the Immersion campus, I was very appreciative of how small and exceptionally light our devices are. If they weren’t, I probably would have toppled over from the weight of our usual marketing gear! Note to self: bring a wheelbarrow next time. J In any case, we made it in time to set up two Galaxy S IIs and two Galaxy Tab 10.1s in the testing lab of the Silicon Valley Android meet-up last Friday. We even had a couple minutes to breathe before our Android guru, Hod Greeley (aka Hodster), took to the front of the room to go over the basics of Open GL ES, and how you can use it to create 3D graphics in Android.

Pro adds volume and speed options and allows the user to select from 40 voices and 200 I tro sound fx. If you are a serious bidder and want to see the Pro version which is only $0.99, I can gift it to you or send a promo code. You can also view our YouTube videos by visiting [obscured] and clicking Videos. Look for AutoRingtone or ringtones uncensored. Ignore the Ringtone Director video as that app is more complicated (but if you do a good job, I might ask you to port that app and others... I have 70 iOS apps!)

Basically the app has you fill in a few text fields and submit them to our web server via GET or POST. The text fields are used to create a text to speech ringtone. Upon successful submission, the app downloads an MP3 file which it plays and saves for use as a ringtone."

July 21st Wavefront meeting recap

While we were setting up for our Vancouver meet-up at the Wavefront building on Hastings street, the pizza delivery guy showed up with about 40 pizzas for the room full of developers we were expecting. With his arrival came the first of the highlights of the evening: butter chicken pizza! I have to say that I wasn’t sure what to expect, and even the first bite left me on the fence. But as soon as I took that second bite, I was sold. I am really glad that I got that first piece because as soon as everyone started showing up, it was like the Nicholas Cage movie, Gone In Sixty Seconds. It also made the job of setting up the display station of our devices (we brought some Wave IIs, Galaxy S IIs and Tab 10.1s) much more enjoyable. :)

Kennedy Space Center – July 8, 2011 — Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile), a leading mobile phone provider and the No. 1 mobile phone provider in the U.S. 1, and Google™ today announced Nexus™ S, is aboard NASA’s final space shuttle. As a leader in technology and innovation, Samsung is pleased to be a part of this moment which will most certainly be marked in history.

Nexus S from Google is part of research that will equip small, free-flying satellites called Synchronized Position Hold, Engage, Reorient, Experimental Satellites (SPHERES) used by the astronauts to provide a broader range of capabilities and give better communication between land and sky. Nexus S is the first commercial smartphone certified by NASA to fly on the space shuttle and to be cleared for use on the International Space Station. The experiment will use the smartphone-enhanced SPHERES as remotely operated robots to conduct interior survey and inspections of the station, to capture mobile camera images and video, and to study how robots can support future human exploration.

This event was all about Location based services offered via mobile and Samsung was able to present their own (developed at SERI) Location based Social Networking app on bada - BuddyFix.

BuddyFix is a open source project, which can be downloaded here. We've also put some videos together to help you get started using the BuddyFix code (viewable on our YouTube channel, or directly here)

The presentation, by our own Sameer Ballewar, was an overview of both the bada ecosystem and BuddyFix, the most social location based application we know of!

Location is an interesting topic, which doesnt seem to have been fully monetised yet... I wonder if there is room at the table for a small (low cost) location based advertising firm? Perhaps this is a growth area for our current map providers, NAVTEQ? All they would need is a good CMS & some campaign managers to sell the results?

NAVTEQ sure know how to do a Dev Day!

Yesterday we managed to sneak out of the office to attend the excellent NAVTEQ Dev Day near Tower Bridge in London. Although I was slightly delayed, NAVTEQ pulled a great line-up of speakers together, looking at the current range of opportunities available to developers using map or location data in their apps.

Some excellent networking followed where I was able to get a really good understanding of how NAVTEQ is paying for all of this, where it's looking to develop and how its going to get there. I'd thoroughly recommend making it to the Berlin event if you can!

Ever heard of Fu Hu?

Fu Hu is a baby panda of the Zoo Schoenbrunn in Austria. Samsung Austria developed a bada app to support him. All the money acquired through this app was donated to the the zoo and Fu Hu. We like this initiative.

I know this is going to come as a shock to some of you regular readers, but we've decided to move the weekly free samsung wave apps report to a monthly report instead. "What, no super hot guidance on what apps we should be downloading on a weekly basis direct from Samsung?" I hear you cry - well, no is the answer, because we will instead be producing a free samsung apps weekly report (much more in line with the whole Samsung Mobile Innovator program) instead. This is going to have a mix of the best free apps available from Samsung Apps in the UK, no matter what your platform! Fantastic huh!?! This will start next week, when I've calmed down a bit (and potentially come to you live from AP2011!!).

So, keep your peepers ready next week when the first one will go out!

Battle for Students at Imperial College

Last Monday I was invited to give a bada talk to second year computer science students at the Department of Computing at Imperial College. The idea was to provide input to students who subsequently decide to do projects based on the presentations and presented technologies.

I quite like this approach and it was exciting because several companies showed up to 'battle' for students. Among the companies were -- besides Samsung -- IBM, Yell Labs, and Google (well, actually the Google representative who was supposed to talk about Android did not show up).

Today I had the pleasure of making my annual pilgrimage to Internet World in Earls Court Exhibition Centre. No major surprises this year, with "Cloud" services gaining in popularity and traditional firms struggling to make sense (or monetise) their Digital/Social spaces. There were, as always some undiscovered gems that were worth learning about....

So far, so good! After a mad dash in the taxi, we made it to the event. Could be a few chairs short, but fingers crossed some developers will be happy sitting on each other....

Strong Wi-Fi, good coffee and cookies - what more could you want? With only three tickets remaining, we're stoked about the response so far. We'll be shooting some video & recording the sound so we can mash a video together afterwards for those that couldn't attend.
